In 2008 I found a deposit of soapstone near where I live in Argenta, British Columbia. I had been carving as a profession for 12 years making small totem animals for the Native American style flutes I create. I was thrilled at the prospect of a larger canvas, soapstone sculptures. I started with 'Dreamer', a woman's face with a river of flowing hair in a 250 lb stone. I fell in love with how the rough rock contrasted the smooth, sculpted surface, and the oiling process that transforms the dusty gray rock into midnight black, or copper or green... colours I could not have ever guessed where in the stone.
The following pages are two years worth of soapstone sculptures. I started with the faces because at that time I was just picking up small, loose pieces of stone. As I started being able to pull out larger pieces I moved into the animal and abstract pieces. I am just getting ready to cut into my first boulder. It is a huge investment of time, and it's a thrill to watch an idea emerge out of something so solid as stone.
I hope you enjoy browsing through the site. I have very much enjoyed the whole process of creating it, and I will continue to add to it on a regular basis.
Come again soon.
